Description

Background: The State Historical Society of Iowa has been a trustee of Iowa’s historical legacy since 1857. With a dual mission of preservation and education, it maintains a museum, two research centers, preservation office, and eight historic sites. The society preserves and provides access to Iowa’s historical resources through a variety of statewide programs, exhibitions and projects while serving as an advocate for Iowa’s past and connector to the future. The State Historical Building has recently completed a construction project resulting in new roof and window structure and a new wood floor in the building atrium. This area will be the primary work zone. The globe is stored within the building, accessible by freight elevator. The aircraft are disassembled and crated in the building atrium. Objective: The State Historical Museum of Iowa invites qualified respondents to submit responsive proposals to be considered for steel fabrication, rigging and movement of large-scale artifacts including uncrating, assembly and staging. Respondents must designate a project manager during construction and installation. Respondents will demonstrate interest, knowledge, skills, and experience coordinating and conducting movement and rigging of large-scale artifacts. Our objectives are: Two historic aircraft to be suspended from the steel roof structure of the building atrium. Engineer of record will evaluate and approve all material lists and final plans from selected respondent. • Fabricate hanging hardware as specified by engineer of record • Field verify final positions of aircraft in coordination with museum staff and engineer of record • Determine position of hanging hardware based on final position of aircraft in coordination with museum staff and engineer of record • Attach hardware to steel roof structure using specifications outlined by the engineer of record • Assist with uncrating and reassembly of aircraft • Rig aircraft using approved attachments and cables • Make any minor adjustments once planes are suspended to achieve the safest position • Stabilize aircraft with lateral cables as necessary A 150-pound spun aluminum globe made by Rand McNally Company • Move from storage mount to exhibit mount • Exhibit mount is a metal rod placed at a 23.5-degree angle, mount is centered within a wooden surround
