Iowa Prison Industries (IPI) is a self-supporting program within the Iowa Department of Corrections. More than 90% of the men and women in state prison are scheduled to be released, and IPI prepares these men and women for their return to Iowa communities, which improves their rate of successful reentry.
A new IPI program trains men incarcerated at the Newton Correctional Facility to build affordable homes. These homes are transported to communities across the state and purchased by income-qualified Iowa families. Iowa employers are in need of skilled tradespeople, and this new program prepares incarcerated individuals as roofers, plumbers, framers, painters and other needed occupations, many of which include apprenticeships.
IPI is seeking to procure a customized trailer that will be used to transport the finished homes to all 99 Iowa counties. The homes are large – 24’ wide, 50’ long and 14’6” high. The program intends to manufacture and deliver more than 100 homes per year, so the custom trailer must be able to quickly and safely load, transport and unload these homes. All of the homes are of one size, and so the trailer should be designed for this specific load.
